INVERCARGILL CRIMINAL SESSIONS.
INVERCARGILL, March 4. The Supreme Court sittings were opened before the Chief Justice to-day. His Honor congratulated the jury on the lightness of the calendar, there being only two case 3 to consider — one of false pretences and the other against five young men of breaking into a Chinaman's hut at % Orepuki and stealing liquor and tobacco. A young woman (Minnie Ackers), who pleaced guilty to forgery, was admitted to probation for 12 months. Five young fellows charged with (1) breaking, entering, and stealing liquor, tobacco, etc., from the hut of a Chinese at Crepuki, (2) breaking and entering with intent, and (3) riotously and tumultuously assembled to the disturbance of the public peace, and having injured a dwelling house, were found guilty on the third count, and sentence was deferred. Tho affair arcse out of the Chinese New Year celebrations, and some of the accused had been treated by the prosecutors earlier in the day. That they were more or less drunken was admitted.
