DUNEDIN STOCK EXCHANGE.
The Business done on the Dunedin Stock Exchange on Monday morning was only fair, the transactions being limited to some nine salee in three stocks, but in the afternoon affairs were very dull, pnly one sale being recorded during the call. Notwithstanding that tho returns last week were, with few exceptions, a good deal over the margin of working expenses, there was no inipiovement in the market; indeed, on the whole it was inclined to weaken somewhat, and there was very little competition for the various parcels of shares offered. The river was 7ft above the normal mark at Alexandra, a drop of 2in as compared with Satuiday, while the weather was fine. The river will require to faU another 2ft or 3ft yet, however, before the dredges can work to advantage, but when once the frost sets in an appreciable change in the height may be expected. At the commencement of the morning call the returns from the Al, Hokitika River, Reeves's Proprietary, Mosquito, No Town Creek, Upper Magnetic, and Nelson Creek dredges were announced. For the purpose of showing the alterations in the quotations from those ruling at the beginning of last week we institute a short comparison. Al shareß have been in^uueg lor tg from 25s to 26s 3^, but^
sellers have asked from 28s to 31s. Ahaura Rivera have been steady* buyers offering from 2s to 2s 3d, and sellers closing- at from 2s 6d to Cs. Bxiyer3 have offered from 4s to 4s 9d for Alexandra Leads, while sellers have varied from 5s 6d to 6s. Alpine No. 2 shares have been very steady. Inquiries have been made for them at from 22s to 235, with sellers at from 23s 6d to 255. Boundary Creeks have also maintained a steadiness, with buyers at from 33 to 3s 9d, and sellers at 4s to 59. A sale took place on Friday at 4s. Central Charltons have been asked for at 7s, but without response. The closing quotations for Coal Creek Flats on Monday week were 4s 6d and 6s 3d, but they improved until Thursday, when they were offered at 7s, with buyers at 6s. Since then, however, they have declined a little. Davis's Bends wore neglected until last Tuesday, when they came into prominence as the result of the purchase of the Cairnmuir dredge. Buyers offered Is dis. for them, and holders closing at par, and on "Wednesday a sale took plage at Is p., further transactions being recorded on Friday at 6d and 9d dis. .Buyers offered Is dis. on Monday, with sellers Pt par. Electrics were in the market at 40s on Monday week, with buyers at 3Cs 6d, but sellers have advanced to 12s Gd, and buyers to 38s. A sale cf En- • dcavoura was made at 13s 9d on Mondny week, the closing quotations on that day being 13s 9d and 14=. They have weakened since then, however, the latest quotations being 13s for buyers, without any selling offer. Enterprises were in demand at Sis Gd at the beginning of last week, selleis closing at 335, at which price, there were still sellers yesterday, but withotit'buyers. Sales were effected at 30s 9d and 30s 6d on Thursday. Ettricks commenced last week with buyers at 163 and selleis at 18s, but weakened a liti.'o after Tuesday, though last week's return has had the cSect of causing them to harden somewhat, the latest quotations being. 16s and 17s 6d. On Monday week Excelsiors were asked for at 2s, with sellers at. 3s, but they have hardened since ' Wednesday, and buyers have advanced to 43 6d, sellers closing at Is more. First Chances have been steady, buyers -offering fiom 8s 6d to 9s and sellers asking from 9s to 9s 6d. Two parcels of shares changed hands on Friday at 9s 3d. Fourteen-mile Beaches have not been much in evidence, but buyers have advanced from 14s -to 16s 6d, and sellers from 17s 6d to 18s fid since Monday week. A • sale took place' at 17s on Thursday. On Tuesday Gentle Annies were in the market at 19s, buyers closing at 16s ; but they have been easier since Thursday, when two sales were effected at 17s. Gold Kings have improved n, little, buyers advancing from 4s 6d to ss, and sellers from 5s 6d to 6s. Two sales were made on Wednesday at ss. Golden Rivers were asked for at 7s with sellers at 7s Cd on Monday week, but they improved until Thursday, when buyers offered 7s 7d, with sellers at 7s 9d, since which time they have declined again, the latest quotations being 7s and 7s 4id. Sales took placfr at 7s 6d on Tuesday, at 7s 7Jd on Thursday, and at 7s 4Jd on Friday. Sellers of Greenstone Junctions have asked from 25s 6d to 265, but buyers have advanced from 20s to 24s 3d. Sales were effected at 24s and 24s 3d on Friday. Inchdales i have been fairly steady, with buyers at from j 14s to 15s and sellers at from 15s 9d to 16s 6d. A parcel changed hands at 15s on Wednesday. Junction Electucs have been very steady. Buyers have offered from 22s to 22s 6d, holders asking from 22s 9d to 23s 6d. Sales were made ' at 23s and 22s 9d on Tuesday. Leaning Rocks have been the most prominent stock in the market during the week so far as the number of sales is concerned.' On Monday week shares changed hands at 165., with further buyers- at tha ] same price and sellers at 16s 6d. ,On Tuesday sales took plar& at 16s, 15s 9d, and 16s 6d'; on Wednesday at 16s 9d, 17s, and 16s 9d; on Thursday at 17s, 16s 9d> I6s 74d, and 16s "Gd; j on Friday at 15s and 14s 9d ; on Saturday at los and 14s 9d; and yesterday at 14s. The latest" quotations show that the stock is still weaken- j ing, buyers closing at 13s 6d, with sellers at ! 14s 3d. Leviathan preference shares have been i steady, with buyers at 4s 9d and ss, and sellers at horn 5s 3d to 5s 6d. Meg and Annies have gradually weakened, buyers receding from 20s 9d to 18s 6d, and sellers from 21s 3d to 19s. pSales were made at 20s 9d on Monday week, and also on Friday, at 20s on Saturday, and at 19s on Monday. Monte Christos have been firm. On Monday week buyers offered 30s 9d, and holders closed at 31s, a sale being effected at he I latter price, andf the latest quotations are 32s 3d and 33s 6d. Sales took place at 32s 9d and 32s 6d on Friday, and at 32s on Saturday. North Beaches have been steady, buyers offering from 12s 9d to 14s, and sellers asking from 14s 9d to 15s 3d. No Town Cieeks have improved a little. On Monday week they were asked for at 22s 6d, with sellers at 23s 6d, while the latest quotations are 23s and 23s 9d. Sales were made . «t 23s on Thursday, at 23s 3d on Friday, and at ■ 23s on Saturday. Olngs were steady until I last week's return came in, but have now lm- > proved appreciably, buyers offering 245, with sellers at 24s 3d. Pactolus shares are weaker. At the beginning of last week they were in the market at 445, with buyers at 41s, while the latest lhquiry was at 40s, with sellers at 40s 6d. ' Point dOrs were neglected until Monday, j when a sale was made at Is 9d dis, at which ■ price there were further sellers, buyers closing j at 2s dis, Reeves's Proprictarys have been j steady, with buyers at 15s and 15s 3d' sellers ' asking from 15s 9d to 17s; Rise and Shines Have finned a httlo. A week age* the quotations were 11s 9d and 13s, but buyers have now advanced to 12a and sellers to 14s. Royal ■ Maoris ha-ve- fallen away a good deal. The secretary of the Charlton Creek Dredging Company reports that the dredge has been stopped since Thursday to permit of the boiler being cleaned. The Shepherd's Creek dredge is opening out a new cut right across the creek, and there are - signs cf improvement. , \ The secretary of the Celtic Gold Dredging Company reports : —"The dredge is working well, but as there is a lot of tailings returns will be low for a week or two yet. The dredgemaster of the Three-mile (Greenstone Creek) Dredging Company ivires that he started at midnight on Sunday. The dredge is working well, but the snags are numerous. The dredgemaster of the Lady Charlton Company reports that the rain on Sunday hns enabled him to resume dredging. The directors of the Riley's Beach Gold Di edging Company left Dunedin on Tuesday, in order to proceed to the claim to witness the trial run of the dredge, which will take place about Thursday next. It will, however, take a few days to shift the dredge on t-o her own claim. , At the Gore Warden's Court on Thursday, ■ before Mr Geo. Cruickshank, Warden, an upplication of the" Lady Charlton Company (Mr' ■ PoppelwelJ) 'for- a- special -claim was granted, conditionally on the-conpent of the Southland County Council being obtained. The dredgemaster of tjie Central Mataura No. 2 dredge reported on the Bth inst. that he procured a new driy^ for the main friction, and had no trouble "7h fitting it in position. The wash is making heavier, and the gold is showing signs of improving. There is more coarse gold showing than has been the case for some time. The dredgemaster is getting a fair paddock opened out again, and the coal in the wash is disappearing. The Shellback dredge, in course of construction by the Dispatch Foundry Company, Greymouth, is now almost completed, and dredging will start about the end of the month. Mr M'Cormack, late of Ruby Creek, is to be dredgemaster. The owners of Shellback No. 2 havo received an offer from another company possessing a dredge, but have decided not to deal with their property until tha No. 1 claim is proved. The secretary of the Champion Gold Mining: Company, with the newly appointed manager and engineer, inspected their newly acquired diedge on Wednesday (says the Tuapaka Times), and made arrangements to 'rave her removed at once to the company's claim above the Beau mont bridge. After paying for the dredge the company has a rredit balance of £350 n!though on'y 8a per share have been called v.> on the new issue of 8600 shares. An Auckland telegram states that during tin four weeks ended March 1, the Waihi Gold Mining Company treated 12,933 tons of ore for a return of bullion valued at £41,000, which is the best return the mine has yet yielded, tha previous record beirgr for December last. The v total won from fho mine to date is £2,055,061.
The Warriinoo, which left Wellington for Sydney on Saturday, took 160 tona of cargo, of whith 112 tons were from .southern ports.
