OWAKA STOCK SALES
The Otago Farmers' Co-operative Association report:— We held our annual lamb and sheep sale at Owaka on Thursday. The day was exceptionally fine, and a record yarding of 2958 sheep and lambs came forward. The sale opened without much spirit, and dragged considerably throughout, but as soon as owners realised that the outside markets had cased, their ideas were lowered, and a lot of satisfactory business resulted. Ultimately, under the hammer and privately, we disposed of the bulk of the entry as follows — Best lambs, 8s 3d to 9s 4d ; others, 6s to 7s lid ; wethers and ewes, 11s to 12s 9d ; fat ewes, to 12a sd. There is no doubt that this annual sale is a great boon to the settlera of this district, and although prices may be slightly disappointing this year, they will not always be so, and owners will be serving then own interests by upholding this sale. — On the same day we held a sale of cattle, when tho large entry of 250 head of all classes was offered. Bidding opened fairly well for good steers and bullocks, and these sold at full rate 3, but other descriptions were not so eagerly taken at some reduction. On the whole, however, both the cattle and sheep sold at rates equal to, and in some cases exceeding, the prices obtainable iv outside markets. Following are the prices realised —Bullocks, £5 10s to £6 15&; cews and hoiieis, £1 10? to £6 4s; young cattle, £2 Gs to £3 11s, calves and yeaihngs, 15s to 365.
