SMOKE CONCERT.

The bowling tournament was brought to a cloae on Friday evening by a smoke concert given in the Victoria Hall. Mr C. F. Greenslade, president of the association, was in the chair, and on his right was Mr W. Jacques (vice-president) and on his left Mr R. T. Wheeler, jun. (secretary). There was a very large attendance of visiting and local bowlers, and the smoke concert — in which the bowlers were able to enjoy a smoke and a friendly chat and fight their battles over again — was a pronounced success, and proved a fitting close to a most successful tournament. After the toast of " The King " had been loyally honoured and Mr Jesse Timson had played an overture, Mr J. G. Gow, of Timaru, proposed ; the toast of "The New Zealand Bowling Association," coupled with the names of ; Messrs Greenslade and Wheeler, who responded. After some musio, the prize- | winners were called up and presented with the certificates, which are really the chief incentive, as follows:— -Rink Match: First prize, Taieri dub (Mr OarsweH'e rink) ; •econd prize, Timaru Club (Mr J. Gr. Gow^s t rink) ; third prize, Roslyn Club (Mr W. O. 1 Allnutt'a rink). Pairs Match: Firetprize, t Messrs W. Carswell and G. P. Howell < (Taieri Club) 5 second prize, Messrs Evans j and Bewley (Caledonian Club) : third prize, 1 Messrs Sanders and Sanders. Singles : First prize, Mr W. by the leaders of the players, who alt received an ovation. Mr C. T. Patersoni proposed " The Visitors," which was re-* sponded to by Mr W. Jacques (Canterbury)i Mr Kingsland (Southland), and Dr Reid (Timaru). Mr Barnett proposed "The£ Ladies " in a humorous speech, in which ha referred to the intelligent interest taken int" bowling by the ladies of Dunedin. TheY toast was responded to by Mr D. M'Phersoinji The toast of "The Losers'' was proposed* in a most happy speech by Mr J. B. Callaa'' and responded to by Mr Waddell (Oamaru)/ in the absence of Mr Martin. The othei; toasts were " The Press " and " The Preeif dent" (Mr Greenslade). Songs were sung} by Messrs J. Jago, E. Eagar, Porteoua (Southland), Dr Reid (Timaru), and Mr? Abernethy. A quartet party — Messrs E? Eagar, J. A. Hopcraft, J. Jago, and: F. M^ Jones — sang a couple of selections. A1~t» Amos played a flute solo, and recitations were given by Messrs MacEwan and Duggan (Ohristchurch). Mr A. J. BartK relieved Mr Jesse Timaon in playing the accompaniments on one or two occasions. In playing off for third place in tho Single-handed Tournament, G. P. Howel>, of the Tairei, beat A. Louisson, of Christchurch, with considerable ease, the score being 25 — 11. Howell has therefore securedv a place in all the events of this tournament^ being third player in the winning rink, lead in the winning double, and third in the Singles. The Taieri have alsjtfanother player who has distinguished him'- 1 self in W. Carswell, who was the skip }ijT the winning champion rink and the "skip" in the Champion Doubles. W. Barnett, of Christchurch, - a veteran player, has car l ' ried off the Single-handed Championfihip, and the honour of second nlace belongs to H. W. Reid, of the Kaituna Club. Timaru; represented by a rink skipped by J. G. Gow, came in for second place in the Rink Tournament, and a Roslyn rink skipped by W. C. Allnutt, won third place. T. Bewley, of Milton, and J. S. Evans, of the Caledonian Club, ' were successful in getting second place in the Doubles. T. and J. Sanders (Kaituna Club) taking thin} position. One rink from the Dunedin. ' Club made a stand, but were beaten in playing off for third place. At the invitation of Mr C F. GreensUde, president of the New Zealand Bowling Association, a number of visiting bowlers and members of the various bowling clubs iit Dunedin paid a visit to his residence afc' Burkes on Saturday. The drags started from the Shamrock Hotel at 11 o'clock, and drove to Mr Greenslade's residence. During the day the games of spiral skittles, lawn tennis, ten pins, and archery all had their votaries. Over 100 persons were present, amongst the visitors being Messrs Storey, Smith, Manning, and! Dr Thomas (of Christchurch), Mr prummond (of Ashburton), and Mr Martin (of Oamaru). The local olubs were repre-* sented by Messrs James Hisloo, R. T. Wheeler, J. A. Kirby, and J. A. Millar, M.H.R. A hearty vote of thanks to Mr Greenslade for his unbounded hospitality during tournament week was carried with, musical honours. A very enjoyable time was sepnt, forming a fitting wind-up to the tournament.
