THE LABOUR MARKET

John Skene and Son report under date 4th inst. as follows -j-We are able to report this week a good clemai.d for all classes of country workers , also a good many tradesmen going off. Some classes of workers are a little more plentiful, still the orders entrusted to us are "yet far ahead of the demand. We are placing daily the following: — Rabbit poisoners, ploughmen, grooms and gardeners, mill and harvest hands, carters, fencers, blacksmiths, carpenters, painters, and blacksmith's improvers. AVages remain much the same as m our last report.

The Otago Farmers' Co-operative Association have sold on behalf of Messrs Wm Kirkland lElmgrove). D. Pollock (Outram), R. Law tLawfield), and others, 29 pigs at from 8s 6d to 545.

A Wellington firm of merchants, having sent samples of butter to India with the object of testing the market there, has received the following reply from a Rangoon ( firm: — "The samples you sent us duly came i to hand, but we regret to say we see no chance of any business. The freight is three i times as much as we are now paying for Melbourne, which is out of tfre question. Then, again, we shall be at a great disad- ' vantage in regard to transhipments, which are sure to be many. Under the circumstances it is quite mipo6sible to open up .bjuinnj,"-
