ALHAMBRA THEATRE

The Alhambra Theatre was about two-third* full on Saturday night, when Dixs Gaiety Company appeared in a change of programme. The vaudeville programme submitted was, on. the whole, a good one. ■ Mr John Collins opened the ball with a comic turn about an Irishman committing an assault with a brick, but it fel; rather flat. Miss Annetta Bodin, appearing fo£ the last time, sang " Only a working girl, ' and^ while the song had very little to recommend it, the popularity of the singer gained her an emphatic recall. Mr Harry Baxter got through \ very well, and i 3 singing a good deal better now than when he appeared in Dunediu with, another combination some, time ago. Miss Kitty Lenton appeared in selected songs, ancfe was followed by Mr Albert, who has established himself on a very favourable footing with Aihanabra patrons. The Lingard sisters, assisted by Miss Beattie Galardi, gave a very graceful •ung and dance, " The honeysuckle and the bee.'' A word of praise is due to the Missep Lingard for the care they have bestowed upon their stage costumes. Mr George Dean, probably the most versatile of the comedians now appearing with Mr Dixs Company, gave a very;, good performance, and his songs certainly had' the merit of originality. He was twice recalled, and even then the audience were loth, to part with him, in spite of the fact that the clever performance of the Lentons was ,to' follow immediately after. These talented'acrobats again went through their novel act' to the complete satisfaction of the house, and! concluded, aa usual, with an- exhibition of hatspmnmg. The hats are, of course, specially, made, and are of a conical shape, apparently about 12in from the base to the apex. The dexterity- with which the Lentons pass them from one to the other, catching them on t-heir heads, is remarkable. Mr "Frank Yorke, facile princeps in the burnt cork domain of vaudeville, had a good reception as he came on the stage to conclude his Dunedin season. His big voice and breezy presence have always been, a source of delight to Alhaonbra audiences, and? after he had been recalled several times he made a speech, thanking his friends for their expressions of goodwill, and expressing the hope that he would soon be back again. The Lingard sisters, Miss Cars. Dalby, and Miss Beattie Galardi finished out the programme; which terminated, as usual, with a farce. This was funny enough to be worth waiting to see.
