TAPANUI RACES.

First Day—Wednesday. The -weather was fine for the first day of the Tapanui Racing Club's annual meeting. There was a good attendance, and -some good racing was witnessed during the afternoon. Bookmakers were present for the first time for a number of years. As the club's course, it appears, is a reserve, according to the recent decisions regarding the right of entry to the Riccarton and Wellington courses, and therefore bookmakers have the right of entry on any occasion, and cannot be ejected. In former years the police have alway9 kept the bookmakers off the Tapanui course, but this year, acting -under instructions from Dunedin, they did not interfere in any way, and the first course in New Zealand from which the metnlliciaji3 were excluded resounded again with offers to bet on the field. Blackpool obtained a two lengths' advantage at the start owing to Donna Rosa swerviug at the barrier. After going two furlongs Donna Rosa passed Blackpool, but the latter came again inside the distance, and in a good finish was beaten by a long neck. Time, Imin 21 sec. Second Day — Friday. The second day of the Tapanui Racing Club's annual meeting was held on Friday. The weather wa-s beautifully fine, and the attendance good. The machine receipts shwed a shrinkage of £1158 at compared with the amount handled last year. The following are the details of to-day's racing : — STEWARDS' HANDICAP, Of SOsovs ; second horse ssovs from the stakes. 29— Mr W. R. Quin's b m Donna Rosa, 6yrs, 9.3 (R. Quia) 1 7&— Mr A. Hawthorn was quickest on her legs from a good start, and led for three furlongs. Here (Quickshot and Donna Rosa showed out in fiont, but, once m the straight, Quickshot II was done with, and at the distance Donna Rosa led Hawthorn by three parts of a length, the Htter apparently going well. The quartet were bunched upon entering the straight, and a grand nice home saw Western Bell beat Transport by n. head, Visionary, a half length away, third, and Donna Rosa a good fouith. The field lay close together until the straigbt was reached, when Epic came away and won by three lengths. The Gunner beat Lancelot by a head for second place. Time, Imin 2<isec. Dividend, £7 10s. A protest against. Epic for inconsistent running was, after consideration, unanimously dismissed. FLYING STAKES, Of 30sovs ; second horse ssovs from the stakes. Four furlongs. 38— Mr A. R. Foray, whipping round, got left at the post, and did not take part in the race. Cboroid and St. Ulva got away in advance of Shogun, and raced together until halfway up the straight. Yesterday the Hurdles was won by Eucharis, with Pukana second (dividends, £1 6s and 12s) ; the Trial Hack by Platypus, with Poataniwha second (£3 4s and £1 8s) ; the Cup by Mourner, with Van second (£9 10s and 12s); the Telegraph Stakes by Aldiqga, with Green Sleeve second (£l9 12s and 18s); the Members' Race by Lady Dean, with Rectangle second (£5 13s and £4); the. Railway Welter by Boko, with the Guesser second (£6 2s and £2 7s) ; and the Konini Handicap by Cave, with TVaimuni second (£l3 Is and £3 3b).
