CANTERBURY DOINGS

By Fbitz.

■ Ths Midsummer Handicap, which will coma [ up for decision at the Summer meeting of the I Canterbury Jockey Club, does not promise to j prove a particularly interesting contest so far j sis the numericil strength of the field is conj cernsd. The acceptances received on Friday { last number seven only, and in all probability, these may be reduced before the eventful day. Mr Stead scratched St. Michael and Skobsioff shortly after the weights appeared, presumably, because he considered they were harshly irestrsl. St. Michael certainly received his full iV.re, And though the other horse might liHve had a few pomds less, tho handicapper was not,.apparently, far out. jEiieso defc-cKons were added to on Friday, whea the pen drawn through the names of Lady lillian an' 3 Redoubt. No surprise whs< expressed fit the withdrawal of the Istter, but it was generally imagined that Lady Lillian would have been given a, run. Falmen 8 9, Cannie Chiel&B, Cameo; 7.13, Motor 7.10, Dundas 7.8, JDjin Djin 7.7, ancfCiilibre 6.7 now constitute the field, and I should not be a bit surprised to see Fulmerr score. Cannie Chiel is very well, but tho tracks are hard, and the son of Clanranald is never asked to do much on flinty ground. With a soaking rainfall and nice going on the day, he will require a lot of beating, notwithstanding his somewhat poor Wellington display. Cameo is going nicely in his work, but ha is not thi horse he was twelve months ago. Dundas has been given a capital opportunity of distinguishing himself, but even if he wero absolutely flying on the track I would have none of him. Ho has run so disappointingly so often as to preclude the possibility of anyone trusting him. Of his pace there is not the slightest doubt, but of hi* heart there is. Djin Djin is travelling with his usual deternm>atioii. but the hard going may induce <t return of his infirmity, and Calibre must show something decent In public before I can fairly lecommend him. Seven two-year-olds and four & year oleUr Btill remain in the Middle Park Plate, and on pnper it in difficult to see how the selected Yaldhurst representative can miss securing tha stake. Mr Stead has retained the engagements of no fewer than six-\vi*., Royal Artillery, Cruciform. Mcnschikoff, San Remo, Orion 5 , and Impcrflior. Tbc following horses at rreaent constitute the field: — 'Sir G. Clifford's eh f A&erlow, by Clnnranald — Golden Vale, 2yrs 'Sir G. Clifford's br f Dirk, by Clonranald— Snf<?gunrd, 2yrs Mr D. Gordon's eh c Porirua, by Seaton Delava! — Waiteniata, 2yrs *Mr C. G. Dalgety's br c Firebrand, by Stepniak — Firecross, 2yrs *Mr W. Stubbs's br c Capetown, by Mannlicher—Hettie, 2yrs Mr G. G. Stead's br c Royal Artillery, by Hotchkiss — Rose of Wellington, 3yrs Mr G. G. Stead's eh f Cruciform, by St. Leger — Fcrmp, 3yrs "Mr G. G. Stead's h c Menschikoff, by Stepniak — Pibroch, 3yrs Mr G. G. Stead's b c San Remo, by St. Leger — Cissy, 3yr3 Mr G. G. Stead's br g Orloff, by Stepniak— Sortie, 2yrs •Mr G. G. Stead's b c Imperator, by Gipsy Grand— Coronal, 2yrs •Claim slb allowance. The race is now worth 500eovs, and if four or five animals are sent out it will be about all. Penalties and allowances will seemingly make no difference to the result, and I should not care to pick one to defeat one of the bearers of the yellow and black. The nominations received for the minor events to be run at tha meeting are very fair, and the names of the) horses engaged suggest that we may look forward to witnessing a few closely-contested races. There appears to he every probability that tho proceedings which followed the raid on bookmakers' premises in Dunedin will be shortly repeated here. On Wednesday afternoon last Chief Detective Ckrystall and his assistants raided the premises of Messrs-Bar-nett and Grant in Hereford street, where they" discovered Mr M. Barnett and a couple of clerks. After the search warrant had been, read the detectives proceeded to seize every; scrap of paper they could lay their hands on, not even the smallest waste-paper bit being allowed to remain. "Forms at a Glance" Uj tha number of about 200 were packed up, and! in company with ledgers, race cards, telegraphic forms, and memo, forms were bundled together and deposited in a four-wheeler, (ji detective and policeman keeping watch ana ward that not a scrap should escape. An in;erested crowd soon choked the thoroughfare, and the proceedings were closely scanned by some hundred^ pf yfeojle, mans^ pf whom sat

jokingly asked if they had any objection to give evidence, as their names were there all right. It is understood that an information has been laid against the firm by the police, and that the latter are seeking evidence to assist them in their prosecution.

At Amuri on Friday the annual race meeting ■was held in the presence of a goodly number of country visitors. Gewgaw won the Flying Handicap, Graduated Tax and Sovereign filling the respective places, whilst Land Tax defeated Bisley and Sovereign in the Arnuri Cup. The Mile Trot was secured by Dixiesland, and the Two-mile Trot by Myth. Balkmore was successful in the leading race, and Harkaway was too good for Little Minister and Glenogie in the Jumping Competition. The scratching of Blazer for the C.J.C. Champion Plate and St. Albans Handicap appears to indicate that the brilliant son of St. Clair ■will have to remain in retirement foi some time, as a result of the kick he received when at the post for the Telegraph Kandicap in Wellington.

Sir G. Clifford's horses are registering some capital work. Aherlow is improving a great deal, and Windwhistle, Dirk, and Tercelet are bowling along in nice style. The Chokebore team ought to secure a race or two at the forthcoming meeting. Rosemere has not been asked to do much since he returned from the coast, and in coneequence he. is building up a great deal, and losing his rather leggy appearance. Cora Linn has never looked or galloped better than she is now doing, and there should be several fair stakes in her keeping before the season closes. Dundas, Lady Dundas, Walda, Huku, Stepdancer, White May, Wepener, and Firebrand are also executing useful work.

Romany Queen, Cruciform, Royal Artillery, St. Michael, San Remo, Orloff, and Imperator ■were brought down to the course from Yaldhirrst on Friday morning. With the exception of San Remo, who- showed signs of soreness, which, however, wore off after he had been worked, the team looked wonderfully well, and galloped in a pleasing manner. The travelling registered by several of the horses named does not appear to have affected them, and their condition needs no comment.

Lady Medallist is galloping very freely just now, and this us are will be hard to defeat in her near engagements.

Daisy Chain, who met with an accident whilst running in a race at Riccarfon last November, was recently destroyed. There is absolutely no betting on the events to be decided at the C.J.C. Summer me: ting.
