WETHERSTONES.
February 3.— A gloom was cast over Wetherstones last Thursday, when a telegram arrived at the post offica here to the effect that James M'Clusky had been drowned at Waipori, while working at the Success dredge. The deceased was a native of Wetherstonea, his parents re- ' siding at Happy Valley. Hia mother— who is getting very frail— was naturally very much distressed at the terrible affliction that had befallen, her. , , ,' Obituary. — I am sorry to record the death ot another old miner— Ned Ellis,— who died at the Lawrence Hospital early on Saturday morning, *fter a few days' illness. Deceased was a quiet and genial man, and a bachelor, and resided at Gabriel's Gully. He was a shareholder in the old Otago cement claim at the Blue Spur up to the time it was taken over, with the other claims, by the present company, in which he held some shares. He was for some time in Ballarat, where he belonged to the Foresters' Society, and on arrival at Tuapeka he joined the local Foresters lodge. Both funerals took place yesterday <S Fl«9^-On Monday, the 27th ult., the biggest flood occurred in the Wetherstones Creek that we have had for some years past. There were over 20 hoxira' steady and heavy ram. The Phoenix dam and the dam at Malone s Flat were both full to overflowing, and this added to the flood. , , Weather.— The rest of the week has been dry and warm, with a high barometer it being as high as 29.86 on Friday night, but falling, and this morning it was down to 29.18, with a strong N.W. to N.E. wind. Yesterday was the hottest day we have had, the thermometer being 90deg in the shade at noon, and in the sun 118deg ; at 8 a.m. of the same day it was Mniin~ —The Golden Crescent did not wash down last Saturday, as their water is getting short.
