MR R. H. RHODES'S ACTION.

CHRISTCHURCH, January 31. Mr R. H. Rhodes, M.H.R., who goes to South Africa as an officer of the eighth contingent, has been complimented on hia decision to do so by many meetings in the Ellesmere electorate. Some meetings voted unanimously for lepve of absence fiom parliamentary duties, but most of them left to himself to decide whether ho should resign or not. In. any- case, the feeling seems to be that on his return the seat is secured.

A large, and influential meeting was held a; Leeston to-day to consider the form the gathering will take which ia to be held in Mr Rhodes' s honour on Tuesday evening. A strong committee was appointed, with power to act.
