January 20. — A very enjoyable sociaA waS a^j given by a few of the benedicts and bachelors', of this district on Friday, the 17th. The weather being fine, there was a very largo attendance from all parts of the district. As there was a very good committee, consisting ot Messrs P. Deem and T. Mvii (benedid.'), J. Herd and J. M'Donald (bachelors), everything went off as well as could be wished. The filer, part of tho social took the form of a concert . in which some of the performers carried on; their parts in a highly satisfactory manner. As it wouid be impossible to go right through the programme, I shall mention a few of tha itemswhich deserve special praise. Tlie opening, speech, by Mi F. Deem was followed by i, medley, in which Mr J. M'Donald -did ac ■ well that he was carried shoulder high into thi middle of the hall; duet, "A fond kiss," Mis:; A. .Deem and Mr J. Dreaver; song, " Brinr* baok my bonny.'' Miss R. Boss; cloa danee <

Mr J. M'Donald ; song, ' Grace Darling," Mr T. Muir; song, "Jack's the lad," Miss A. Deem; song, "Sweet Rebecca, Mr F. Deem; lecture, '" Stray-walloping," Mr J. Parkhill. At this part of the programme there was an interval of five minutes, and then a few dances. Part II was opened with a song, " Rob Roy Macgregor," by Miss R. Ross; song, "Tom. Bowling," Mies G. Ross ; violin solo, Mr F. Bayly ; sketch, " Scottie," Messrs A. Muir, J. Brown, and Vv. Morrison; song, " PoliJ-wolly-doodle," Mr J. Herd. After the concert refreshments were handed round, and were done ample justice to. Then dancing followed, and was kept up till daylight. During an interval jn the dancmg=Miss R. Ross gave an exhnbition of her agiiity as a tumbler, m which she received a lot of well-deserved applause. Mr F. Bayly played the accompaniments except in " A fond kiss," which Mr J. Drearer p'.aycd himself. Messrs J. M'Donald and J. Herd made very efficient M.C.'s, to the capital music of Messrs J. Parkhill and J. Dreavcr. After a hearty vote of thanks to those who took a leadir.g part and did so much to make everything "a success, all went home after having enjo\ed themselves to their hearts' content.
