HOW THE EMPIRE IS PEOPLED.

NEARLY SEVEN-EKiHTIIS BLACKS. Attention having been drawn by the Prince of Wales to the need for suitable emigrants to the Biitish colonies, the follow ing table showing approximately how many subjects of his Majesty are British or of British descent, how many are European of other than British origin, and how many are natives or Asiatics has been drawn up by " Commercial Intelligence." The figures are in many instances estimated, but in all cases are estimated from the best popsiblo sources: —

Tho figures for Canada include about 2 000 000 inhabitants of French extraction, while in South Africa the army has not been counted, though it has been included in the vxhite population of India, and :tl=o under the head of "Remainder of the Empire.'
