Tho Bank of England returns show the reserve to be £23^60,000, and the coin and bullion in hand £32,902,000. ' The proportion of reserve to liabilities is 44.61. The notes in circulation total £29,292,000; public deposits, £10,328,000; other deposits, £42,047,000; Government securities, £20,373,000; and other securities, £26,797,000. Three months' bills are discounted at 3 per cent. Consols, £93 17s 6d. Quotations for colonial Government stocks are subjoined, compared with those ruling at the close of last week : —
The wheat markets are quiet. American is weak and irregular, owing to the failure of a large operator in Chicago. Cargoes are dull. South Australian November shipment is quoted at 30s 3d. There is a fair trade in butter. Colonial, 104s to 106s. The Kumara's shipment was landed in excellent condition. Danish is flat at 108s to 109s. Cheese : Firm, and unchanged. Rabbits: Firm at 8W to 9d, owing to the light shipment. Hares are neglected. Sugar: Firm. German, 6s Od; first marks, 8s 3d. Copper: Firmer. Spot, £46 17s 6d; three months, £47 2s 6d. Tin : Steady. Spot, £104 15s; three months, £101 10s. Pig iron, 49s l^d. Lead, £10 8s 9d. Spelter, £16 13s 9d. Silver, 2s 111-16 d per ounce. The Bradford wool market is steady, and prices are unchanged. , At the kauri sales prices were firm ; 3057 cases were offered and 630 sold. ' Good three-quarters, scraped, £120 to £125.
