A Flag For New Zealand. TO THE EDITOR.
SiE, — Some of your readers may not have noticed the peculiarities of the letters forming the initials of our colony. The two letters are practically of the same form, the N being transformed into Z by simply turning it over on its side. Setting them down together as we usually find them, we have, of course, the familiar NZ. If, now, we turn the paper upside down, and repeat these letters, we get this combination, which roads NZ over NZ, the letter N being repeated in two of the corners, and the letter Z in the other two. Moreover, their positions and shapea are such that the reading is unchanged in whatever way the paper is held". , i. -x. The to P may be turned to Si* &° r * lther Sl £ e m *y be held uppermost, but the combination remains the •J^w^iT* * rin £ ±he le *«*3 close together so, that they touch one another, we get a. regular harmonious figure consisting of four triangles suggestive of a Maltese-cross hub having the triangles differently arranaed It is practically a New " Zealand monogram, in which, the two letters are easily distinguishable .when • viewed from four different points. As a further peculiarity this monogram presents the two corners of the Union' Jack, and these again may readily be transformed into the New Zealand monogram by joining the first and second, the third and fourth, the fifth and sixth, and the seventh and eighth. This last feature suggests the idea mat
the Jack and the monogram would !iay« made an excellent New Zealand flag, hut ib may, trouble your staff to print it. — I am, 'etp., ' ' Dunedin, December 17. Senex. '
