THE WEEK'S^MINING NEWS Extraordinary deposits of alluvial gold futv« been diacoxsred along the Horse Fly River in the Cariboo district of British Columbia, ihe famous stamping ground of the ! oM " forty-niners." It was thought that che ! men who overspread the Cariboo country in 1857 had exhausted " the diggings," and for some years past white men have been content to leave them to Chinamen, who have l>een panning over the ground with fail . returns. The Cariboo district takes rank as the richest placer diggings eve? discovered, and the present reported finds indicate that the "forty-niners" only touched the fringe <Jf the gold-bearing area. Placer mining has ibeeri carried on in British Columbia since 2858. In 1860 the output amounted to Z,228,5#2d01. In 1863, high-water mark, the output totalled 3,913,563d01, most of which came from the district now being worked. 3?or five years ' th© product continued over 2,000,000d0l per year, and remained over 1,000,000d0l until 1881,, when it began to decline, and for the past few years the prbdiiet of the placers has-been comparatively insignificant. There- is a tremendous " rush " now in progress to the Horse Fly country It is simply marvellous what development has taken place in gold^nming in Canada in recent years. It is only four years ago since the Yuk«n goldfield was discovered, and in that period ihere has been a steady increase in the output. This year, for instance, the shipments for the four full months of the •xport season are as i'cllows : — Dollars. June - < .. We got started on Thui-a day, and now we have opened out, and s"e quite safe and independent of the darn. The dredge will ba closed down before Christina <;, and will remain so until after the New Year. ' Mr J. J.
