CONCILIATION BOARD.

The following recommendations have been filed by the Conciliation Board: — OTAGO AND' SOUTHLAND DREDGEMEN'S UNION.

That the parties to the said dispute enter into an industrial agreement for a period commencing immediately after the expiry of one month from the filing hereof and enduring until the first day of January, 1904, the agreement to contain the following provisions : — Eight hours to be a recognised shift. All work done over eight hours to count as overtime and to be paid for at tinia and alialf, excepting time, not to exceed an hour lv each week, occupied in washing mats. The minimum wages for dredge hands shall be as follows — In the ifolyneux River and gorges and m the baiiks of the Molyneux above Roxburgh Bridge and in the Kawarau and its banks, 10s , in the Molyneux River and gorges and m the banks of the Molyneux below Roxburgh Bridge, 9s; m the lest of the industrial aistrict, 8s; load makers and men employed otherwise than as dredge hands are not included in this recommendation. Any dispute as to the class to which a dredge belongs shall be decided by the chairman of the board. All shifts to go louarl, save in the Molyne'ix and Kawarau, where the keeping of the engineer on the day shift is a matter to be determined by the diedgemaster. No cadet to work a dredge hand's shift unless he be paid full wages. Wages to be paid at not greater intervals than once a month. The following -holidays shall be observed--na-rnely, New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, and Christmas Day. Sunday work and work performed on hoii« days to be x>aid for at dotible lates. Eight hours fo be a standard day's work on five days af the week, and on Saturdays four hours, but the diffeient shops can arrange 10 work a fiaction of v.n hour each clay to make up for the Satuiday half-holiday, for which, fraction no overtime shall be charged.

Overtime shall be paid at the rate of time and a-quarter for the first two hours ; after the first two hours time and a-half. Double time shall be paid for Sundays, Good Friday, Christmas Day, New Year's Day, Easter Monday, and Labour Day ; for other statutory holidays time and a-half. The minimum rate of wages for journeymen shall be Is 3d per hour. Any journeyman who ■deems himself not capable of earning the minimum wage may be paid such less wage as snay be agreed upon in writing between the employer and the secretary to the union for six months; and further, until either party shall give notice to the other requiring sveh wage to be .ncreased, and in case of difference, such wage shall be settled! in writing by the chairman of the Conciliation Board.
