WELCOMES AT QUEENSTOWN AND ARROWTOWN.
(Fkom Our Ovrx Coijkespondext.)
ARROWTOWN, October 24.
General Sir Hector Macdonald arrived last night at Queenstown per s.s. Ben Lomond, and was received at the jetty by the Mayor (Mr F. St. Omer) and a large concourse of people. The band was in attendance, and played a number of suitable selections.
Instead of going to the Head of the Lake to-day, Sir Hector went to Arrowtown, where the band and a large number of residents turned out to receive the distinguished visitor. The General lunched at Jopp's Royal Oak Hotel, the band playing several selections appropriate to the occasion. After lunch the General, accompanied by the Mayor of Arrowtown and some members of the council, -was driven by Mr Jopp to the Arrow Falk claim to have a glimpse of gi/d-xnining. Much pleased with what he saw, the General returned to Ajvowtowu, and after a ghost rest loft for
Queenstown, where he leaves to-morro\* morning for Dunedin. The weather, though a little squally at times, was fine and the sun was shining, and the General evidently enjoyed his outing very much.
His Worship the Mayor (Mr G. L. Denniston) telegraphed Sir Hector Macdonald on Tuesday morning congratxilating him on, his arrival and welcoming him to New Zealand, and expressed the hope that he would! address the school cadets, for which a parade was being arra*ged. Sir Hector replied : — "Shall arrive Dunedin late Friday, 25th. Shall gladly see cadets. Thanks for welcome."
Mr A. Lock, town clerk, Port Chalmers, received the following reply to his invitation to visit the Port from General Macdonald on Tuesday: — "Please convey my sincere thanks to mcyor, councillors, and citizens for kind welcome. Would be delighted! could I visit you, but fear time is not available." It is hoped the mayor, whd will! meet General Macdonald on his arrival at Dunedin, will succeed in getting him ta alter his decision and visit the Port, if only for an hour or two.
