LUMSDEN.

September 16. — Since the frost left us, and up to last Thursday, the weathei was all that could b-p desned, but during the past few dava it has been very squally with occasional phcweis at night, fo'lowed by light. frosty nioi"iing t , interfering with the tender buds m paideiis and fielcß Yesterday (Sunday) was very stoiny, the wind almost approaching hurricane force, accompanied by cold ram •-bowers.

Agricultiua'. — Everyone engaged m this pursuit ;s hard at it, Lite and eariy, "owing cr picpaung ioi it. The soil 's getting iv>to capita' condition, and m a few weeks more of good weather the bulk of early spring sowing v.ill be completed — much carLer than was anticipated a tew wrek-s ago.

Farmers' Union — A we'l-atfenaed meeting was held m the Public Hall on Saturday evening last to discuss matters in connection with th.s subject, Mr Yardly being m the chair. Mr Andrew Small was appointed hon. secretary, and Mr L. Walker hon. lieasurer. A good deal of business of interest to farmers and those connected with farming wa= dealt with, the meeting being most enthusiastic. A large number of names were then handed m, and all were e.ii oiled as members, f.fter which the meeting adjourned till fuither notice. Sickness — I regiet having to note that the doctoi' is fctill quite busy :« his professional capacity visiting patients. At the same tune, 1 tin pleased to say that by Dr Todd'a prompt attention and skifvl treatment no fatal results have to be lecorded.

School Mattel's. — Our head master, Mr Clsuk, is about being offered a well-merited promotion. It seems the board has now recognised his abilities as a teacher. Many of us will be sorry to lo^e Mr Clark's services, but at the same time are pleased to know that the change :s to his own ttdvantage, and the holding' of a. higher petition m the board's service.

Er.tertranments,. — A number ef concerts, socials, etc., aie to camf off within the next few viceks. Ihe first is the Chinch of England annual f/itertamment to-night, the proceeds to be in aid of the btuld'uig iund. Nty'i rome« the Oddfellows' social on the ißth, an invitation party, and nlv/ays a. most en^sj-able one. Then "follows the Lumsdpn Mutual Improvement; Society's windtip social, also always a pleasant gathering, at which each member is privileged to invite one friend. Again, there 13 to be a concert in a:d of t'.ie reading room fund. This, also, is to be the cl-osing night of the lectures that have been carried on during tho winter months for the purpose of raising funds wherewith to build a reading room on a section near the railway station. 'Miich credit is due to the Rev. Mr Lyrnburn, Dr Tcdd, and Mr Clark, assisted by others of both sexes, for taking the initiative steps in the endeavour to supply a long-felt want in our village- -viz.. a comfortable reading room, which is now almost assured in the r.car futur°.

Weather.— Sunday and Sunday night were very stormy, there being a heavy fall of snow on tha distant hills. The Oreti River and tributaries aie using fast, but unless a warm wind acts m I do not anticipate a flood just vet.
