Heard ye the tale of the Norseman, Of Eric, descendant of scu-kings? List to the song of the bard, Heard down the ages. Loved he the daughter of Olai, Fair as the star of the .norning Wrathful her father, and scornful, Olaf, the king. Gloomy the night; black the storm-clouds; C. ashed forth the loud-poaling thunder. BHie gleamed the lightning aucl ghastly, When reft be the maiden Five days and nights boie he noithwaid; Met he the ice-king, and conquered. Followed grim Fate m his foaming wake, Olaf, the king. Weird was the north, wend its secrets, Dreadful the face of its w.Uers. * Numbing Ihe shock of its icebergs; Death in their meeting. Stark was the fight, grim its story; Hiltred the sword* of the heroes ; Many the guests for Yplhalla, When Olaf boaided. Limned 'gainst the blackness around them, Blue-vaulted, towering above them, Grindiiis; m loud-crashing tumult, Soared die ice-mouiitams. Smiled guzzly Death, as he listened; Smiled as the feast of swoids dufted Into the fog and impalpable gloom, Shrouding the Vikings. Seek ye the fate of the heroes? Go l Ask the bergs which have melted, Seeking the sunny South ' Go!
