LONDON WOOL SALES. (From Our Special Correspondent.) LONDON, July 19.

TRICES FIRM AND MARKET STEADY. Anothei week of good business has t>eeu done in Colenian Street Wool Exchange, and tho re-,ult-> rank up to the best ot any yet .-cached this seiie?. The past week has been characterised by animation and keea con-petition equal to that of thr previous week, and in saying this we are reporting a good deal. Steadiness ha 9 been the characteristic element of every sitting, and it has been a frequent topic for comment as to how persistent and continuous has been the buying of both the Continent, America, and the> Borne trade. In addition, one of the features of tha week has been the buying on. United States account of several parcels ot" super grease. As a result, values of the best classes now mostly stand at 5 per cent, above the closing quotations for May. Medium and inferior sorts, although *t times against the buyer, cannot be quoted e<; any higher than at the commencement. The (ierman contingent of buyers have continued very active all through the week, taking anything from medium to super parcefs in merinos, French buyers favouring most tho best grades of both grease ana scoured. Tasmanian wools again formed a special feature of the offerings, and extietne prices >vere readily paid, all sections being anxious to obtain a portion. Crossbrecs have been in good demand, notably good coarse descriptions, which, under the stimulus of American competition, are selling flt slightly firmer rates than obtained at the opening, the came conditions obtaining in medium grade*. Superfine qualiti-Sj are now all about on a par with May :ate3, being taken both for Homo and export. Some fine comeback wool re. eently offered In ought the haudsome figure of ll£d pet lb in the grease, and 8d to 9d i-i a very frequent figure. South African wools have been in fairly good supply, but except for the best descriptions have only occasionally shown an advance on thf> initial drop.

W t) L in diamond: Giea>y — 7 first crossbred 4.Jd, 9 do combing 4^d io second do 4Jd, 12 do 4Jd, 18 do 4d, 9 Lincoln combing 4id, 16 do 4d, 9 crossbred lambs 4d, 13 scoured crossbred withdrawn, 3do pieces 4id, sdo locks 4Jd. Such isrices are by no means satisfactory, but the majority of the wools will not scale more than 4D's. - Ohlti : Greasy — 5 halfbred 6Jd, 4 A crossbred od, 15 B do sd, 3 do 4Jd, 5 C do sd, 23 do 41d, 17 do 4id, 8 first do pieces 3%d, 5 B do 3\d r 8 scoured first Lincoln 6Jd, 3 do second do 4|cl, 3do crossbred pieces ssd. An average clip, and well grown. The position of things, in Bradford is hardly »o depressed as has recently been the case, and the commercial barometer has . iroved up two or three points. This has teen brought about, not 60 much by any increase of business, but purely and simply as* the outcome of the strong position of merinos in London, and the continuance- of the sales at their best is a subject lor mucli comment. There is a better feeling in the market, caused by the firmness of raw •wool at the distributing centre, but as for any actual increase of turnover, such is not the case by any meauf. Circumstances have compelled topmakers to put up their pi-ices ' in self-defence, but we have not as yet heard tell ii the higher rates being realised. It is still possible to operate in any quantity of the very best combed super 60's tops at 18£d — a figure far below the cost of wool in London when combed. A big business could possibly be done to day if topmakers would accept what spinners arc- inclined to offer, and while ( prices are fully up to recent qx:ctation.«. yet no one can realise what tops have cost, either j in merinos or crossbreds. It is thi3 fact ; that blocks business, and speculation being to-day an unknown thing, trade and turnever are no better. ' The question of consumption is a subject of vital importance to-day, and one on ■which the immediate future of wool depend ?. Here in Bradford trade remains m a very stagnant condition, and the fact of Wooicombers' shares having dropped to 'tis per 9hare is indicative of the bad state of it-ado in Worstedopolis. There is plenty of machinery standing in every department, and much crying out foi the want of work is heard. It is now very evident that Bradford's real position is but a secondary :onsideration in London, and when the Conti- , ncnt and America are in buying form high ■ prices, without any sagging, can be maintained. Crsssbrci wools are- still unchanged, and j demand is all running: on bright hogs, Irish dpmi-lustre wools still suffering severely. Lcwei offers have been made without any Luiincs resulting.
