Duntroon Anglican Church.
TO THE EDITOR.
Sir, — In. your issue of 14th August, I lead p most glowing description of the new Anglican Church at Duntroon under the title " A Beautiful Specimen of Gothic Architecture," winch must have emanated fiom the inventive biain of some one deeply interested, o. addicted to romancing. I, of course, expected to see ' a thing of beauty," which would be " a joy fot ever" to the inhabitants of the " Waitaki mission district." Fancy my disgust, when, tinging along the mim road westward from Duntroon, a pile of massive stonework, " misshapen, hideous," met my startled eye. A small, duaipy main building, with two ugly excrescences, or what might be annexes, jutting out from rt on the loadsicle, with one solitary window ii? 'the deep recess between the excrescences and the towei. 1 obseiverf wir-dows on the south side, facing the bad weather quaitcr, where the sun can never shine on them. There is no glittering under the eaves, so that the water from the roof will urn clown the walls, and soon cover them with unsightly, dimp lines and moss. The inside may be all that is claimed for it— l did not see it,* but the north elevation will always be an eyesore and a blot on the landscape. Your aiticlc calls the position " an admirable site." That is a matter of opinion; it appeared to me as a long, narrow, sharp-pointed triauglo at the ,i unction of two diverging loads, too small for the building, and which cannot easily be made ornamental or pleasing. I think, considering the laige sum of money spent (I hear about JE2500) a church a little largei and )f bolter outward appearance might have been erected. I tried to get a photogiaph of it to send you, but could nofc obtain one. — I am, etc., TRAVELLER. rThank you veiy much. "We have one in hand, and are only waiting ioi one of the incumbent to publish it. — Ed ]
