THE RETURNED TROOPERS.
The Waihora, with- -40 of the returned troopers, reached the cross wharf shortly after 8 o'clock on Wednesday mocmng. The men were transhipped from the Britannic -at Melbourne, and were met at the Dunedin wharf by Messrs J. A. Park and C. R. Smith, on behalf of the Patriotic Committee, andvwelcomed back. Lieutenant Elder (Wellington), of the fourth contingent, and who also (.erved "with the seventh, is in charge of the men, and was made the guest of the Patriotic Committee, andr' quartered at the Grand ■Hotel until to-day, when he proceeds north. There are also five men on board the ship l>eT<s4£ii£f to' South Airie&ii' Cirps. Sergeant fW&lfce*, of Gisborne, a -member of the fourth i-ootingent, was left behind in hospital, Buffering from measles and chest complaint. fW^lker, it seems, specially distinguished •himself by capturing three" Boers after his officer was shot down when entering a farm'houße. The New Zealander secreted himself outside the house, and grabbed the Mauser iiqm the first Boer who came out. He then compelled the others to surrender, but his brave action was unfortunately ' not recognised through the officer in charge being - killed. Sergeant Langsn, who is one of those to return by the Waihora, has been awarded the D.S.O. for the capture of a convoy, while acting under .General Babingtou. One or two of the men arc suffering from measles, and other minor complaints, but are, generally spea&Tnag," in fairly good .■health. Trooper O'Hagan, of the Imperial Light Horse, who came from Oamaru or Tunaru, died of hemorchage n of the lungs during the passage of tjhe Britannic shortly before the steamer reacned Albany, and was buried at sea.
