KELSO.

July 21.— After a Bhort spell of thaw we art once more experiencing the rigours of winter, the frost this morning having apparently set is as hard as ever, md as there is a good deal deal of snow lying about yet, the weather v (Intensely cold. F»rn» work is being kept back very much by th* protracted period of frosts, and farmers generally are devoutly wishing foi a change t. enable the ploughs to getto work once more. Turnips, of which it was at one time feared there would be ajshortage, have held out better thai was jxpected, and stock' consequently have fared fairly well. The past fortnight ha? experienced quite a boom in sheep, and the more sanguine amongst onr breeders anticipate s return to last year', prices.

Weighbridge. — A movement is on foot foi th establishment of a public weighbridge m Kelso. . I thin]; it would be move to the benefit of the farmers, wh« aie the persons mainly ui-

ierested in the movement, if they could induce the railway authorities to put in a weighbridge to weigh all goods on truck, instead of one run on private lines as is contemplated. Our Volunteers. — The Government drill instructoi had these in hand on Saturday for the first time) when there was » fair muster of members. A meeting was held in the evening in. connection with the corps' business, to consider arxang-ements for uniforms, parade ground, etc. I hope to see the Kelso Mounted Rifles become a power in the land, and, wish them success. A Successful Function. — The social and dance held on Friday evening in honour of our returned troopers, Messrs Ross, Robertson, and IWyse, was one of the most successful functions ever held in the district. During the evening the three troopers named were each presented ■with a handsome gold medal as » souvenir from the district of their services during the war. Trooper Rosa was also presented with a beautiful T^old albert, he having been the special representative from the district, on the following evening.
