SOCIAL AT OUTRAM".
A social was -held in the Societies' Hall, ; Outrarn, on Thursday evening to welcome back ' th« Taieri returned troopers. Invitations were sent to 16. Hastie (Dunedin) wired that he was unable to attend, and Buckland wi.ed tiom Winchester that he.could not be present, but , wished them a happy social. The following ' troopers were present —Oiange, Millar, Wil- j liams, Smeaton, M'Kellor. Anderson, Smaillie, | Findlay, and Gibson. The hall was comfoit- J ably packed, and Mr W. Snow was in the ' chair. The speakeis were the Chairman, Messrs ' Chishohn and John White, who ga\e patnotic speeches, and heartily welcomed " our boys," or rather brave men, not forgetting a word of sympathy for the friends of those who are- sick and the friqnds of those who will ne'er return. The singeis were Miss Bathgate and Miss Cuthbert, Messrs M'Kellor, Chisholrn, and Wildey. Miss M'Kellor played the accompaniment to Mr M'Kellor, and Miss F. Chisholrn commenced the programme with .a solo, and played the accompaniment for the rest of the singers. P.G. P.K. Low gave the Oddfellows' welcome to returned brothers. Tiooper Millar heartily replied to the patriotic addiesse= given by the various speakers on behalf of the returned troopers for the very coidial welcome extended to them An abund*nce of tea and cake of the best was then handed round by the young ladies and young men, and everyone seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves. After tea was over " Auld lang syne " was sting, which brought a most enjoyable social to a close a few minutes before 10 o'clock. In a short time the hall, which was gaily decorated with flags and bunting, was cleared for dancing.
