Notes from Cromwell. (From Our Own Correspondent.) CROMWELL, July 20.
The Alpine No. 2 return was rather above expectations here, but is all the better for that. The return next week is expected to eclipse it, howev-er, as the wash is improving daily, and the gold is obtained from side to side of the river. The_ Alpine Consols dredge got into a good patch" of wash yesterday, and the return will probably show a large increase next week. The Upper Magnetic is only doing fair, and a little gold is being" got. The bottom is said to be rapidly improving. ** The Second Magnetic has pulled ahead again. The Gieat Central dredge has bottomed, and I black sand is showing a proof that the gold is near. The Central Electric wash has picked up a lot during the last two days. The appointment of Mr F. Kitto to the Royal Maori is looked on as one of the best. -The pity is that more masters are not appointed from merit alone, as m this case.
