Tho trial of Rail Uiihsell proved to be a »ival function. It was held in the Koyal C! nl lory nl Westminster. Poor 1 * iippt'iired in their state robes, in foinpany with 11 judges. Tho absentees included the foremost members of the Government and of the Opposition, as woll as the bench of bishops.
Earl Russell pleaded guilty. He stated that ho had consulted the best lawyers in America in regard to the validity of his action. The Court of Peers sentenced him to three mouths' imprisonment, but he will be treated as a firs>t-class» misdemeauant.
Two hundred peers, including, Lord Salisbury and the Archbishop ot York, attended the trial, which was a picturesque .spectacle. Lord Halsbury overruled the objection with regard to jurisdiction. Earl Russell, in pleading guilty, said he erred in ignorance, and had been subject to great provocation. The court returned a unanimous verdict of guilty, admitting the provocation. Earl Russell has been sent to Hollow ay Gaol for three months.
