SYNOPSIS OF PREVIOUS CHAPTERS

Chapters I, 11, lll.— North Hall, on the coast of North-east Northumberland, has an evil ieputation. Built by a speculator, on the grounds of Squire Selby, its bad name bsgan with the suicide of the first occupant. Then followed the loss of a young husband who, with his wife, had for a short time tenanted the Hall. Squire Selby grasps the opportunity to buy at a low figure, but in spite of improvements the Hall stands empty for a long time. It at length finds fresh tenants in a sinister-look-n-,g°man and his beautiful wife— Mr and Mrs Brooke— who subsequently repel all advances nisde by local society, until Major John Selby lorcss nimself into favour. However, e\en lie is shortly made to feel his presence is objected to, and when next he enters the Hall ii, is to find the beautiful Mrs Brooke lying m a pool of her own Wood.

Chapters IV, V, and VI. — 'Twixt life and death, Mrs Brooke is carried to Ysrbrough Hall. The vicar, Mr Graham, and family dme with the squire. May Graham betrays a regard for Jack (the Major), which is not reciprocated. Mrs Biooke, in deliiium, gives a clue to her assailants.

Chapters VII, VIII, and IX.— The widow (Mrs Jenkins, the square's housekeeper) casts her net for the squr.e. Jack keeps vigil by the bed&ide of Mrs Brooke. On investigation of the tragedy, Mrs Brooke declines to enlighten the police on many points.
