RACING IN NEW ZEALAND.

WELLINGTON WINTER MEETING. First Day— Wednesday, July 17. The Wellington Racing Club were favoured with magnificent weather for the opening day of the Winter meeting. This circumstance, together with the fact that the holiday was observed as a city one on account of Arbor Day, was probably responsible for the very large attendance of the public. The course was in capital order, and the meeting in every respect successful and enjoyable. The new system of paying out on the totalisator on first and eecond horses " caught on " with the public, and met with general approval. Bookmakers were present in strong force, on the strength of this morning's decision in the Appeal Court. Speculation was brisker than usual, the sum of £10,998 being put through the machines, as compared with £806* last year. Secoxd Dat — Saturday, July 20 The weather for the second day's racing was the revprse of that experienced on Wednesday. Drizzling rain fell throughout th« day, and the grounds were very sloppy. The going was heavy, and the attendance showed a considerable falling off. The race for the Wellington Steeplechase furnished a splendid exhibition of jumping, and the nine competitors covered the three miles ■without a mistake, which, considering the state of the course, was a capital performanoe. Speculation was again extremely brisk, £10.767 being put through the totalisator. as against £9564- on the second day of last year's Winter meeting. When the field settled down Waitio and Nipapu had charge of affairs, and they showed the way to the front of the stand, where t"he order was Nipapu, Waitio, and Evening, Wonder, Stravbird being fifth and The Guard last. Passing the bend the second time round Evening Wonder ran into the lead, Waitio being next, and Gobo fourth. No material change was made in the positions along the back stretch, except that Hinau showed up prominently for a furlong, but soon fell back. The order passing the stand the second time was Evening Wonder, Waitio, and Gobo. Gobo commenced to go up at the hill bend, and establishing a good lead along the back, was never afterwards troiibled, winning comfortably by six lengths. Evening Wonder dropped back at the far turn, and Waitio beat the dead-heaters by several lengths. Evening Wonder finished fifth, The Guaid sixth, and Stiaybird second last. Time, 6min 4'i l-ssec.
