Aibor Day. — Arbor Day parsed ovei without being obser\ed in Waikouaiti, although there are plenty of spare places- round the Domain which might well be planted with trees, which would help to fuither beautify the appearance of the township. At the Kaik, however, a very busy day was spent, circulars having been sent lound previously by the Karitane Improvement Society asking the folk to turn out and observe a day"s planting on the narrow neck of land' between the river mouth and the ocean — being the place the sea had damaged during the late j lough weathei. There was a willing response I to the invitation, the school children also' being I present, and a good day's work was put in, , refreshments being served out at intervals to the workers. Anglican. — The annual meeting of the parishioner^, of St. John's, Waikouait', took place on Wednesday evening m the schoolroom. The vicar (the Rev. C. A. Fraer) piesided, and there j was a good attendance. The balance sheet | showed a laige increase in the revenue for the year, a ciedit balance of £6 13s 3d being carried ' over to n°xt account. The Ladies' Guild had helped the vestry's finance, and, in addition, had. I given a donation of £5 to the new organ fund, I and had promised to paint the exterior of the schoolroom. Mr Halletfc was re-appomteel ] vicar's warden, Mr A. Heckler people's warden, 'and Mesprb J. A. Townsend, H. Townsend, J. I H. Scott, De V. Blathwayt, li. Blathwayt, R. 1 Jefferib, and J. Dempsey vestrymen for the ensuing year. After the vicar had referred to the -work of the parish generally votes of thanks were accorded to the organist and choir, the Sunday school staff; to Mr Davis, the late oi«anist and superintendent, who had resigned; and to the Ladies' G mid, for their valuable help. i The meeting then resolved itself into a social 1 fathering, musical items being given by several I Tadies. followed by tea and cake, which were ! handed round. i Public Libiary.— Some 55 new books have ! m=t been added to the already large assortment of volumes or- the shelves of the public library here. Cons'dering the yearly subscription is ' only 10s for males and 5s for females, the wonder is that more of the reading folk resident ■ m the district do not come forward and support I this beneficial institution. ] I Trooper's Reception. — Following on Lie ' formal deception of Trooper James Jones in the Waikouaiti Hall last Monday, the Flag Swamp people on the following Friday night held a social gathering in Mr Kennedy's woolshed—the trooper's home being not far away. Although the weather was unfavourable, there , was a good attendance, Mr Rowland Jefieris presiding. The Chairman called on Mr R. i Hd«an, who, after some felicitous remarks, pie- ' sc-nted ' Trooper Jones with a silver watch and albert chain as a token of regard from his numerous friends, m appreciation of his 1 services m Soath Africa. The speaker said th°y ; all felt proud of the trooper, and were glad he had come back amongst them safe and pound, i and they hoped he would live long to make- use 'of the present he had just received. Mr Jeffens also congratulated the trooper on the present given him, and said when he went away to the war he knew it was to no play-work he was going, but that some hard fighting lay before him. Jones had acquitted himself well, and he (the chairman) called for three cneei-3 from those present, which were heartily given. Trooper Jones, in reply, thanked them for the ' handsome present he had received, and thought ■ it alone worth coming back for. He was also "lad to see he had so many friends and wellwishers there to welcome him home. Dancing was then indulged in, interspersed with songs and other items, and an abundance" ot refresh- ' ments was supplied all round.
