DREDGEMEN'S UNION.
The dredgemen of Otago and Southland have foimed and registered themselves as an industrial union under " The Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act, 1900," and the following are the proposals submitted by the secretary to the various companies interested in dredging ■ — 1. Eight hours to be a. recognised shift. 2. All work done over eight hours to count as overtime, and to be paid for at ordinaryrat as. 3. Minimum wages, 10s per shift. 4. All shifts to go round. Where, however, dredgemen are required to work always on the 4 to 12 and 12 to 8 shifts, such * work to be paid for at not less than 2s per shift over ordinary rates. 5. Cadets to be paid half wages while cadeting. jNTo cadet to be allowed to work a shift unless he be paid full wages. 6. All wages to be paid at not greater intervals than once per month. 7. Holidays. — Jfew Year's Day, January 2, G-ood Friday, Easter Monday, May 24, King's Birthday, Labour Day, and Christmas Day. 8. All work done on Sundays and holidays be paid for at double rates. 9. Unionists to have preference of employment.
