Did It Himsel f.
An amusing story was told lately of a , gentleman who hated every kind of punning and jplaying upon words. He even opposed his daughter's marriage to a man .who was otherwise unexceptionable, .because he now and then made such a joke. At last he gave his consent, and the -wedding took place. i Now, it is supposed to -.be very .unlucky, indeed, if. for any reason a newly-wedded | pair have to turn baok after once starting upon their journey together ; but not once, i but twice, had the carriage to stop on ac- , count of things forgotten. j The bride's father was furious. The second thing was the ice-axe — they y/ere going to Switzerland for mountain climbing — and the parlour-maid rushed out wildly with it. Handing it up, the enrag-ed parent shouted — i "This, sir, is the climax!" ■, " Yes, the climb-axe ! " retorted the bride- ! groom distinctly, and left his father-in-law speechless with rage at having so committed himself.
