SCOUNDRELS AND CO. By Cottlson Kernahan. London : 'Ward, Lock and Co. Dunedin : Braithwaite's Book Arcade. As a clever, exciting, and ingenious story of the detective type, never flagging in interest or lacking in adventure, we may heartily commend '" Scoundrels and Co." They are such eminent and utter (scoundrels, too ! Swindling, robberies, dynamitings, and murders, all come easily and naturally into the plans of the " Council of -Seven." As we follow the episodes which link together in thrilling succession these clever creations, the pleasure is enhanced by the excellence of their literary style. There are detective stories and detective stories, and, as an earnest of Coulson Kernahan's ability, in this line one may recall his "Captain Shannon." Something, too, of the wonderful imagination shown in " God and the Ant " ; the brilliant emotional realisation of " A Book of Strange Sins " ; and the character-drawing is always so firm and so strong in all his books is evidenced in the commoner and lighter theme of " Scoundrels and C 0 .," and lifts it above the level of its contemporary rivals in the 'field of mere ingenious plot and originality m crime and criminals.
