Pioblem 1795 (Tourney Problem No. 17).— A fine waiting move, which do-es not interfere with Black's position ; the mates are not quite pure or economical (80).— Teitius. A type of an almost perfect block problem; rich variety, purity, ap.d economy are in evidence, absence of duals a pleasing feature; play fair (80). Gambit. Fairly easy, since a waiting key is suggested; nice strategy; several mirrors, no mate pure or economical (83).— J. L. Power. Key essential to two mates; pretty difficult; thoie are six fairly good mates, one of them pure (80).— G. F. W. Good key, and rather hard to^ find : good variety of mates (88). Argo. Good waiting key; pleasing variety; R x P is a capital try, only defeated by r-q 2 (85). — Seva. '
Problem 1796 (Tourney Problem No. 18), Stai of Hope. — Rather easy key; as Black has only one move, there is consequently no variety; the mates with the U and B are neat (65)— Seva. A good key move ; mates not pure or economical ; no variety \7O).— -Argo. Key easily seen without working for it on board; also essential to on© mate, there being only two mates, one of thorn economical • poor problem (50).— G. F. W. Pretty and economical problem; position resembling that of an end game; absence of check on second move commendable; two economical mates; deficient m variety; white P at X 4 prevents cook (81).— J. L. Power. A fairly deep key and deep second move; none of the mates pine, but oae economical; contraiy to expectation, the knights do not move m the course of the solutions (75).— Gambit. Fair key, but no variety: a pooi pioblem (67).— R. J. W.
