FATALITY ON THE RAILWAY.
A fatal accident occurred at the cattle yards on the 18th inst. to a man named John P.hodes, a, resident of Black's road, North-East Valley. He had been at work at the caitle yards, and knocked off at 5, and was awaiting the arrival ol the train to convey him to town. As the train approached the station at the cattle yards, he, in company with other workmen, eroded the railway line in front of the engine, and, being the last of the party, was knocked down by the engine, and sustainod such severe injuries as to cause almost instant death. The body was horribly mutilated, both legs being torn, the head badly smashed. and the man being practically disembowelled by the engine. The railway officials in charge of the train did not see the man crossing the line. The body of deceased was brought io town and taken to the Wharf Hotel, where it was seen by Dr Gordon MacdonakL Rhodes was a married wan with a family of one child. An inquest will be held this afternoon.
