June 21. -The country is jubilant ovei the exceeding mildness of the winter. The approaching visit of royalty is beginning tc 'make itself felt, especially pmong oui khaki boys, who aie bent on niusieiing in strong force to do honour to our Royal visitors. The adverse piospects, and particularly so in the case of last season, have given rise to an opening for othei channels whereby to keep the volt from the door. Of the several branches of n dustry whereby other districts supplement their exchequer considerably dairying has bf-en chosen for attention n tine distiict. The idea of establishing a central factory in or near Timaru — with creameries as feeders at the various country centres— has been well received, and has been put into practical form. Several minor meeting have been held, and a large representative gathering has taken place in Timaru, a-s a result of which a provisional directorate has been formed, nad prospectuses issued. Applications are invited for 10,000 JEI shares in the proposed South Canterbury Dairy Company, and these are being freely applied for, so that ere long the great want will probably be cows of the right class, for undoubtedly at present South Canterbury is by no means rich in first-class dairy stock. Eodents. — Though bunny has ceased to be a bane to the pastorali=ts' existence the "little cuss" is still rightly given his quota of attention, and tlie department are evei on the alert to deal destruction, or rather to see that destruction is meted out as opportunities offer. Of late the usual winter poisoning has "been pretty general, and the extensive use of pollard should have proved very effective, the weather being most favourable. Locally hares are more numerous, and also more troublesome, but fortunately the Sd or 3d offered b> exporters is having the effect of large numbers being constantly shot and stoied.
