THE CITIZENS ADDRESS.

The members of the Reception Committee

were anything but pleased on Saturday night when Mr F. R. Chapman read to them a telegram he had received fiom Captain Alexander stating that the citizens' address would be presented to his Royal Highness at the railway station on the arrival of the royal party at 6 o'clock. After members had ex- , pie&fied their views on the alteration, it wa3 decided to despatch the following telegrams ion the matter : — " Captain Alexander, private secretary to his Excellency the Governor, Ohristchurch.— Decision to deliver citizens' address at railway station instead of Octagon ia received with strong disfavour by myself, city councillors, and Executive Committee. Every I preparation has been made for function at | Octagon, and I strongly and respectfully i press for reinstatement at original place. — G. >' L Dexxiston, Mayor." i " The Right Hon. the Premier, Christchurch. — Captain Alexander has just f.^nt a j telegram that will cause fee gra-^est offence I here— namely, that the city address is to be 1 presented at the railway station instead of j being handed to the Duke at the Octagon. ' In view of the great response made by the I citizens and council, it certainly seems a very great pity that at the lar.t moment, sifter we had compiled our programme, it should be altered like this, more especially after we were assured by his Excellency that 1 no alteration in the programme would be made without our being advised. — R. Ghtst(Lll, Chairman of Reception Committee. ' A reply was also sent by MrF. R. Chapman on behalf of the commissioners. On Sunday Mr Chi=holm received the fol- | lowing telegram from the Right Hon. the Premier- — "Re your telegram in connection j with proposition" to change plaro tor receiving address ■ Everything, has been satisfactorily arranged, and there will be no change. The address will be presented at thp dais at the Octagon, and replied to by H.R.H., as originally arranged.— R. J. Seddox."
