THE VOLUNTEER EMEUTE. (From Our Own Correspondent.)
WELLINGTON. June 21
'A number of the visiting volunteers have i«quested Mr Wilford to take up the matter of the Newtown Park scandal. Mr Wilford Bias forwarded the Premier a letter setting forth the circumstances, and requesting an immediate inquiry. He suggests an independent commission should be appointed to decide who is to blame, and urges immediate action. A complaint has been made that up to the very last there was an utter lack of consideration shown to the horses and men. Yesterday some Otaki troopers started for home, driving their horses before them ; but the animals got out of hand, and found their way back to the park in the evening. This afternoon some Wairarapa troopers were to start homewards, each man in charge of five horses. The railway department cannot carry the horses, so the journey is to be made all the way by road.
