HAWKE'S BAY
The late mayoress (Mis G. H. Swan) of Napier, was the recipient of a handsome silver tea^and coffee sei vice, butter dish, and tray from a number of ladies as a mark of appreciation of the manner in which she had carried out the duties of the position during the long mayoralty of her husband. The presentation was made by the present mayoress (Mrs John M'Vay) on behalf of the subscribers. Mrs Swan suitably replied, expressing her surpiise and pleasure at being made the recipient of such a handsome gift. A meeting of persons interested in the formation of a woollen factoiy was held in the Chamber of Commerce, Napier, and was attended by a large and representative gathering of commercial men, sheep-farmeis, and otheis. The president of the Napier Chamber' of Commerce (Mr D. A. Baxter) presided, and placed befoie the meeting the benefits to be deiived from such an industiy. The project was taken up mo«t enthusiastically, a«d a canva&s of those piesent re&ulted in 2500 i-hares being applied for. It was resolved to pioceed with tbje formation of the company at once, a provisional directorate being formed, and from the pi onuses of suppoit already leceived the company is in a fair way towards flotation.
