SOCIAL TO TROOPER DICKSON.

Trooper A. Dickson, of Croydon. a member of the fifth New Zealind contingent, who has been invalided home on account of an attack of malarial fever in South Africa, was tendered a reception social on the sth inst , when over 100 friends a^ombled to honour the returned soldier. Speeches were delivered by the Rev G. Hervey (chairman), Mr M'Nab, M.H.R., Messrs C. Grant.and A. Strachan, and Quartermaster-sergeant A. A. Mac Gibbon (Mataura Mounted Rifies), all the speakers paying a tribute to the patriotism displayed by the British nation in connection with the war, and extending a hearty welcome to Trooper Diok=cn In the course of his speech Mr M'Nab expressed hi 3 pleasure in presenting Trooper Dickson, on behalf of his friends in the district, with a valuable gold chain as a token of their highest respect and esteem, and hoped he would long be spared to wear it. Trooper Dickpon returned thanks for tbo present, and said ho was pleased to be in their midst once more. Mr R. Dickson, father of the guest, returned thanks on. behalf of himself, wife, and family to the Croydon people for the reception his son had received. During th_ evening songs were rendered by Misses Grant and Harland and Captain Bowler, while refreshments were supplied by the Croydon ladies, after which the hall was cleared for dar.cing, which was kept up with vigour till early morning. •
