political circle^ to-day. Ho had a rema- talvfaj carper in the saddle, and quite outrivalled'i his compeers. Hales was born at Portland^ (Vie.) in '47 (says the Bulletin). In his earlyjj boyhood his parents moved to Penola (S.A.^ then to Robe, where Hales, agod 13, ivonf his first race on a chestnut named Euciid.j Hales only weighed -\bout 4st. Later h v won three hurdle races nnd a steeple ore Ta-tiara Ncct he went to the employ o? E Stockdale, Lake Havvdan station. Hero Hales broke in Smuggler for C. B. Fisher* On Smuggler he wo", his first metropolitan, race on the Thebarron course. In '72 he accompanied Ryan's string to Melbourne. His first mount there was on Benvolioin Mnril.vrnong Plate, won by Dagmar. He rode The Ace, second to Quack, in Melbourne Cup. His next master was Winch, in whoso violet, white sleeves, and can he did wellWon Adelaide Cup with Ace of Trumps. Then he had a rare sequence of successes in Jellett's black and white spots on Richmond Won Australian Cup, '75. on Lurhne. Next did much work for the Sr. Albans stable. Then, in Long's service, came tlfe great Grand Flaneur record, including a Melbourne Cup. After a spell with De Mestre, Tom reached his zenith with White Hales won the V.R C. Derby seven times, Oaks five, St. Leger ten, Australian Cup eight, Newmarket Handicap twice, Champion seven. At Randwick the A J.C. Derby ( half a dozen times. Oaks four, St. Leger seven, Sydney Cup thrice in succession, and Metropolitan once, Caulfield Guineas thrice. Never won Caulfield Cup. In conjunction with Yeomans he acquired Milbey station, on the Lachlan, but Hales: only retained his interest from '83 to '88 He purchased Halcwood. of 600 acres, near Tallangatta. on the Mitta Mitta. As a breeder he was unlucky Out of 1678 mount" Hales won on 496.
