MELBOURNE, April 8.

The ketch Elsie, insured for £600 in the National of New Zealand, was wrecked at Koorong Beach.

A fire at Martin and Company's large drapery establishment caused great destruction of stock, valued at £100,000. Every insurance compar.y in the city is involved. The loss and amount of damage are not yet assessed.

Martin and Co.'s building and stock were valued at £115,000. The damage is estimated at between £70,000 and £80,000. No details have b,een. received.

The whole western wing of Martin and Co.'s large three-storey "building was gutted. Great damage was done by water and smoke. The eastern wing is still smouldering in the basement. Some 130 employees and a number of customers were inside at the time of the outbreak. The male employees lined up the main entrance, and assisted all the- females to escape before they themselves attempted to leave.

In one instance passengers attempted to get into a boat, when a Malay sailor drew his knife and cut the boat adrift. The vessel is fast breaking up.
