CYCLING CHAMPIONSHIPS.

LEAGUE OF NEW ZEALAND WHEELMEN.

CHRISTCHURCH, April 5. The first day's cycling championships under the auspices of the League of New Zealand Wheelmen were held at Lancaster Park to-day in splendid weather and before o\er ,5000 spectators. Much interest was taken in the races, especially in the Championships, and fast times and splpndid racing were the order right through. Kershaw, of Sydney, had a spill while training a few days ago, and did not compete. Barker, of Christrhurch, was also absent through illness. Results: —

Two-mile Handicap (amateur). — S. Frew, 190 yds, 1, R. J. Martin, 235 yds, 2; W. H. Hellaway, 186 yds, 3. Time, ton 41sec.

Half-mile Cash Championship of New Zealand.—R. Connell (Teniuka) 1, A. Ralston (Dunedm) 2. Also started Sutherland (Christchurch), Glarkson (Pahnerswm North). The riders left the mark slowly in line. Just befoie the filial bend was reached Connell challenged, and getting on terms with Sutherland, wore him down, ai.d won by a length from Ralston, who beat Sutherland by a foot. Time, lmin 9spc.

One-mile Amateur Championship of New Zealand.— W. Reynolds (Auckland) 1, W. Turnbull (Sydney) 2, H. Amos (Timn.ru) 3. Al=o staited Cucksey (Auckland), Whitfield and E. Boyd (Christchmch). When the bell rang Cucksey led immediately behind tho pacei,

Turnbull being next. Amos moved up, aiwT he and Reynolds passed Cucksey. At tho last bend Reynolds jumped, and retained a lead of a length, Turnbull just beating Amos for second place. Whitfield was fourth. Time, 2mm 15 2-osec.

Five-mile Royal Enfield Cup (also car. "ing the Five-mile Cash Championship of New Zealand).—G. Sutherland (Chnstchurch) 1. R. Conuell (Temuka) 2, A. Ralston (Dunecbn) 31 Also started Clarkson (Palmerston North), Holland (Ashburton). Connell led from Sutherland and the others, but with two laps to go Council touched Sutheiland's wheel and fell, bringing Ralston down with him. Sutherland jumped magnificently, and won by 30 yards. Ralston mounted again, and took third place. Time, 11 mm 19sec.

Three-mile Amateur Championship of New Zealand.— H. Amos (Timaru) 1, T. Oates (Christchurch) 2, W. Reynolds (Auckland) 3. Also started W. Turnbull (Sydney), S. Boyd (Christchurch), H. Cucksey (Auckland). All the riders except Cucksey kept togethei until the last lap. Amos won by a length from Oates, who beat Reynolds by two lengths for second" place. Time, 6mm 58 l-ssec.

Two-mile Rudge-VVhitworth Cup Amateur Handicap.. — E. G. Hammon (Christchurch, 95yds, 1, S. Bojd (Chustchurch), 135 yds, 2; H. Lindsay (Christchurch), 150 yds, 3. In the sprmt home Hammon beat Boyd by a length and a-half, with Lindsay a fair third. Time, 4mm 41 l-ssec.

Half-mile Cash Handicap — R Connell (Temuka), 30yds, 1 ; A. Houston (Ashburton), 55yds, 2, J. Connell (Temuka), 60yds, 3. Time, lmm 4 l-ssec.

April 6.

The League of New Zealand Wheelmen Championship meeting was continued at Lancaster Perk to-day. Tn the Amateur Championship W. Reynolds (Auckland) and H. Amos (Timarn) tie in points for the Cyclists' Alliance trophy. Ralston created a surprise in the Five milo Championship by breaking away and securing .a lead which could not be o%ertaken. A regrettable feature of the lacing was the boring of WMtfi^ld by theSydney representative, Turnbull, in the heat of the Half-mile Championship. Remits: — HALF-MILE AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP OF NEW ZEALAND.— First prize, gold medal, of the value of £3 3s, second prize, of tho value of £1 10s.

At the quarter mark Kershaw bega.i to move up, and, cutting down on Whitfield. these two fell. Amos swerved, and Reynolds ga.mng a length lead, sprinted for the tare. In the southern straight Aruos unsuccessfully tned to pass, and in a final effort in the lasi. stretch got on terms, and won by inches. Time, Imm Msec.
