LIRUTENT-COLONEL FRANCIS'S FUNERAL.

CHRISTCHURCH, April 3

The funeral of Lieutenant-colonel Francis look place to-day, a very large gathering of citizens was present. The Right Hon. R. J. Seddon and Lieutenant-colonel Newall jcame from Wellington specially to attend. .The deceased was buried with military and iMasonio honours, having held high office in Ifche New Zealand Grand Lodge. The North Canterbury Infantry Battalion, under Major {Day, formed the firing party, aad turned out in strong force. A very large number of .Wreaths were sent by friends, the donor 6 intluding the Ministry, the New Zealand Rifle Association, Colonel Penton, local volunteer officers and corps, members of the fourth contingent, and the Grand Lodge of Now Zealand. Among the -mourners were a number of returned members of the contingents. The Premier returned to Wellington in the evening.

His Worship the Mayor (Mr Chisholm) lia3 forwarded the following telegram of con-,-jdolenee to Mrs Francis: — "Permit me to convey to you my most sincere sympathy in the great sorrow you are called upon to experience by the death of your husband, the late Colonel Francis. His name and his connection with the fourth contingent will ever be green, in the memory of many citizens here in Dunedin." Mr D. A. De Maua, Mayor of Port Chalmen, has forwarded the following telegram to Mrs Francis: — "Accept the deepest sympathy from Port Chalmers citizens on your sad bereavement."
