THE TALUNE POISONING CASE.
SYDNEY, April 4.
The trial of Mrs Smith for the alleged poisoning of Patrick Conw-ay commences on Thursday next. A- strong bar has 'been retained ior the defence, with Mr G. H. Reid as leader.
WELLINGTON, April 6.
Mr Hutehings, chief officer of the Talune, and Mrs Williams, forecabin stewardess, return to Sydney by the Monowai to-day, baring been subpoenaed to give evidence in the Conway trial.
Sergeant Griffiths, of the Dunedin Central Station, received a cable on Thursday morning at 9 o'clock to proceed to Sydney to give evidence in the Supreme Court in the Conway case, and left Dunedin in the north express at 11 o'clock to catch the Monowai at Lyttelton the same n!ght. Sergeant Griffiths's evidence relates particular 1 y to a statement made by Mrs "Smith to the effect that a solicitor living at Maori Hill had completed a transaction with respect to a money matter for her. We understand that a search of the. Maori Hill district by the police failed to find ■ any person of the name given by Mrs Smith, who is or has been a solicitor.
