Chess at Monte Carlo.

The veteran chess player, M. Arnous de Riviere, has succeeded in obtaining 20,000fr from M. Camille Blanc for an, international

tournament at Monte Carlo in Febiuary next. The programme will be issued shortly, M. de Riviere proposing to limit the contest to 12 of the foremost masters and to adhere as near as possible to the rules of the recent Paris tournament, the commencement being fixed for Febiuary 15. There is also a " Salta " tournament piomised ; but it is to be hoped that none of the above money will be diverted for the endowment of the latter. The company who have started this new game are wealthy enough to provide prizes for their players, the publicity they will get for their game- at Monte Carlo being worth the comparatively small outlay which will be reouired for the "Salta" tournament.
