RACING IN NEW ZEALAND.

D.J.C. SUMMER MEETING. Fibst Day — Thtjbsday, November 29. The Dunedin Jockey Club's Summer meet- j ing was opened at Wingatui racecourse on Thursday, showers of rain falling at intervals throughout the greater part of the day. There was, however, a fairly good attendance, among the visitors to the course being his Excellency the Governor and the Hon. J. G. Ward, both of whom were entertained at luncheon by the club. The course was in capital condition, and the surroundings were looking beautiful. Although the racing was not of a particularly exciting character, some rather interesting contests took place during the day. The programme, as usual, comprised eight events, and in four of these the favourites succeeded in getting home. Speculation, on the whqle, seemed pretty brisk, the total amount put through the totalisator during the day being £5001 10s, as against £3352 invested on the first day of last year's meeting.
