* . At Greymouth the other day Miss Forsytfi was presented with a handsome lady's dress-ing-case on behalf of the teachers of tha Presbyterian Sabbath school. Miss Forsyth. is to be married to Mr Peter Barr, of this' city. " The members of the Law Society met at Wain s Hotel on Wednesday afternoon to sayfarewell to Mr W. Wyinks, who was recentlyappointed distr'at land registrar at Invercargill. Mr J. A. Cook (president of the society) occupied the chair, and there were present: — Messrs F. R. Chapman, D'Arcy }J aegiit, G. Moody, J. M. GaJlaway, J. R. Sinclair, S. E. Brent, J. White, F. J. Stilling, D. Held, W. G. Riddell, A. E. Gascoigne, D* Cook, Eimalie,- T. K. Sidey, W. C. MacGregor, H. Baron, F. Z. Moore, A. H. Toakinson; and apologies for absence were read from Messrs J. H. Hosking, J. B. Callan, and' A. C. Ban] on. After some complimentary speeches, Mr Wyinks's health was drunk with great cordiality, those present singing "Foe he's a jolly good fellow." ' The officers of the Land Titles and Deed* Registry Office, with Mr Treseder {retired chief draughtsman) and Mr Corliss (deputycommission of stamps), met at noon on Thursday in the office of the district registrar, Go-t vernment Buildings, to take leave- of Mr W., Wyinks, assistant registrar,, on his promotion;' to the office of district land registrar at In-, vercargill. Mr Turton, in'a, heat speech, presented Mr Treseder with a set in oak, eon- 1 sisting of a tantalus (spirit) silver-mountedT tray, biscuit barrel, leather bag, and silvermounted pipe. . - • - - s . .. •, The Timaru Post understands that Mp, "Veale, the stationmaster at St. Andrews, has' received notice of transfer to Maheno. • . The Mail states that the Rev. R. J. Porter has returned to Oamaru very much improved, in health. The Westport Times states that Miss E. B. Keach, of Dunedin. has been appointed matron of the Westland Hospital. Mr John Nixon, a member of the Mac-f kenzie Mounted Rifles, left Fairlie on Wed-i-nesday morning for "South Africa. He in* tends joining the Mounted Police. Mr M'Kay, the Government geologist, hasbeen instructed to visit and report upon thopetroleum springs at Kotuku, Westland. The Napier Telegraph states that negotiations are proceeding which will probably- result in Bandmaster King, at present of Oamaru, taking charge of the East Coast Battalion Band. Lieutenant W. P. Wall, of the N.Z. Permanent Artillery, has (the Kumara Timesstates) been granted an extension of leaveof absence until after the Christmas holidays. , He assumes command of the Permanent Artillery at Lyttelton'from Ist January in place of Captain Hume, who. is proceeding to England. V Another of the pioneer settlers of New Zealand passed over to the great majority on November 2\, in the person of Mr Charles* Keys, of the Lower Hutt, at the age of 82 years. He arrived in New Zealand in th&-^ surveying ship Cuba ' in. December, 1839,.- *' spending his first' night ashore on January 1.. 184 Q. In June of that year he was married^ at Petone, the wedding ceremony, being- stated* to have been the first in the Wellington pro-,, vince..
