New Zealand Chess Association.

We have been favoured with a copy of the annual report for 1899-1900, from which the following extracts are selected: — For many years the hon. secretary had practically to plod along by himself, the only meetings being the usual pre-toumey and posttourney meetings held at the place where the annual championship meeting was being conducted. It was felt that we were, as regards oiganisation, far behind the bodies controlling cricket, football, rowing, etc., in the colony, and I would here mention that it is due to Mr E. A. Cleland, of Dunedin, that we are today in line with the kindred bodies named. His motion, carried unanimously at the Dunedin Congress in December, 1898, was as follows: — "That a council be formed, to consist of the president, if available, or, failing him, one of the local vice-presidents, as chairman and convener, the secretary, and one delegate appointed by each of the clubs affiliated to the association: Clubs paying two guineas' subscription to have two votes, those paying one guinea one vote; that the council shall meet once a quarter, oftener if necessary, at the place where the secretary resides, to carry on the business of the association; and that due notice shall be given to the affiliated clubs of the business to be brought forward, so that they may be in a position to instruct their delegates how to act." This motion was in due course conveyed to the various known chess clubs, and they were cordially invited to affiliate under the new system. As a result of the Dunedin meeting and siibsequent efforts, the association has during the year consisted of the following officers and clubs: — Patron, his Excellency the Governor, Lord Banfurly; president, Mr Justice Denniston; vice-presi-dents — North Island: Upper division, A. Millar, Esq., J. M. Lennox, Esq.; lower division, Hon. F. A. Arkwright, C. W. Benbow, Esq. South Island: Upper division, J. J. Milner, Esq., W. E. Cooke, Esq. ; lower division, E. A. Cleland, "Esq., Dr W. M. Stenhouse; hon. secietary and treasurer, Fedor X Kelling, care Government Insurance department, Wellington; hon. auditor, Alex. I. Littlejolin.
