SHOWS

TAIEBI SHOW. The thirty-ninth annual show of the Taieri Agricultural Society was held last Thursday in Mr Charters's paddock, Mosgiel. - The weather remained beautifully fine ,all clay, and there was a- large attendance, the visitors to the show ground having the pleasure of listening to a number of selections of music- by the- Mo3giel Brass Band, and also some bagpipe music by Dunedin pipers. There was a record number of enfcrigs at the 'show, which, on the whole, was a very creditable one, although some sections were rather disappointing. The entries were made up as follows : — Cattle 29, horses 203, sheep 62, swine 3, dairy produce 36, miscellaneous exhibits 44. These figures do not include, the exhibits of agricultural implements, which were more numerous than at ar,y previous show in the district. There were 15 entries of Shorthorn cattle, the principal prize-takers being Messrs J. Gow and J. and J. 'Miller; both of whom had on view some animals showing a lot of breeding. The competition," however, was not at all keen in' most of the olaeses. The largest class was '; caw in calf \ or- 'in milk," in' which there 'were six entries, the first prize going* to Mr James -Blair, who won with a cow of very good quality. Mr James Gow carried off the -champibnshiris for cow and bull respectively. show or Ayrshire cattle was not nearly so ''large as might have been expected, there being only 10 entries., The quality of the exhibits, -however, compared favourably' with anything previously shown in the district. Mr A. Swing took the chanroion prize for a cow shown in the dry c!a<=s.~ She was a remarkably wfill-bred animal, and would probably ihave taken a prize in any ring. A good two-year-old bull exhibited by Mr John Mears was the champion bull. There were altogether 63_ draughty horses shown, the quality of the exhibits being quite in keeping with the reputation 'that the district has acqimed for the prochiction of good stock. Tae aged stallion class brought out a ring- of four, the first prize going to Mr Bruce's Marechal Niel, who was also awarded the championship prize for the best draught entire in the show. The brood mares and the dry mares were a remarkably fine lot, while some nice fillies were shown in the two-year-old and three-year-old classes, in both of which there was fairly keen competition. Mr 8.. Charters had matters all his own way in the class " mare and two qf her progeny," but the ring, .which comprised six animals, was one well worth seeing. The champion mare exhibited by him was also an exceptionally fine animal, which it would be difficult to beat anywhere. The^ligbt horses formed a, very prominent feature of the show, there being in all 135 entries. In this section there was a considerable number of very good hacks. In the list hack class there were no less than 18 entries, some of the animals being first-class specimens. .The 14-stone hacks and the ladies' hacks- were - also a good lot, as likewise were the dogcart horses, and theponies not above 14 hands high. Some fine Border Leicester sheep were exhibited by Messrs James Gow'and J. H. Allan, the former taking the champion prize for, a ram, and the latter a similar prize for a ewe, Messrs J. and J. Miller were the principal prize-takers of Romney Marsh sheep, of which they showed a number of excellent specimens. Some fat lambs of very good quality "were exhibited by Messrs A. Douglas, Williamson Bros., and W. Blackie. The display of agricultural implements was the largest ever seen in the district, among the exhibitors being Messrs Booth. Maedonal'd, and Co., of Christchurch, who showed at the Taieri for the first time. The Massey-Harris Company had on view a reaper and binder, a 13-hoe grain and fertiliser drill, a Bandford mower with dropper attachment, a steel hayrake, a turnip pulper and slicer, a set of spring tooth harrows, a garden scuffler, and ladies' and gentlemen's bicycles. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company showed a Walter A. Wood reaper and binder, a Walter A. "Wood tubular steel mower, Nicholson's steel tine cultivators, " Farmers' Favourite " grain manure and turnip drills, the "Hinemoa" potato digger, and the " Hinemoa" horse hoe. Messrs Reid and Gray exhibited a Deering Ideal binder, a Deering Ideal mower, a knife grinder, a " Eureka " double drill, turnip and manure sower, a drill plough, a hayrake, a garden cultivatory and a small seeder. Morrow, Bassett, and Co. showed a M'Cormick reaper and binder, a mower, a 'hayrake, a lifting jack', amd Sterling bicycles.
