"Had a Terrible Cough."
o "I tried several Patent Medicines for Mm, but they only eased Jiiai for a short time." When you hear your qhild coughing at nighfc and notice the cheek becoming paler every day and the appetite less, you may possibly think of this letter : — " 72 Port "Vale, Hertford, England, "May Ist, _1899._ " Dear Sirs, — I have great pleasure in writ* ing to tell you of the very beneficial results your Scott's Emulsion, had ~on my son. For some time he had a terrible cough, often coming on during the night, and when he awakened in the morning it was quite painful to hear him. It would last some time, and when it ceased he seemed . quite worn out and. weak, and could not eat any breakfast. I tried several patent med> cines for him, but they' only eased. him. for a. short 1 time, so I was persuaded t-o tr y Scott's Emulsion, which soon had a very desired . efecu on him. It not only cured his cough, but caused, him to gain flesh, and gave him a good appetite. He was also troubled with, terrible wheezing at the chest, which I thought was asthma, but am thankful to say the Emulsion cured that also. He is now better than I ever expected him to be. I think it entirely due to his taking Scott's Emulsion, and shall ever be thankful he took it. — I am, gentlemen, respectfully yours, (Signed) "Janet Scrimshire." There is a point in the foregoing letter which* possibly may escape your attention unless something is said about it. This is the fact that several patent medicines were tried, bub only afforded temporary * relief.' It is, unfortunately, too often the case that people only look at local -symptoms and treat them with specifics, instead of thinking of the general condition of health which makes the local distress possible. When a hacking cough has weakened the system, it takes more than an ordinary specific to bring about permanent relief. Scott's Emulsion is not only a specific, affording immediate relief to the inflamed membranes of throat and lungs, but it also gives to the system strength and vitality, so that the body can rise above its weaknesses and regain its normal state of health. 3 A drunken man who was picked up in Palmerston North by the police was found with £14 2s Id jin cash in his possession, also two cheques foi £7 each, and a deposit receipt from one of the banks for £1044 18s 6d. A hailstorm of imprecedented severity swept over Warrigal (Vie.) on the 14th inst. Sonia of the 'stones which fell were over 2in in diameter. Windows were broken, roofs damaged, and houses and shops flooded. Orchards were ruined, and the total damage is estimated at several thousands of pounds.
The fire in the Cardiff mine is still burning, but the operations for its suppression have been so far successful that the danger is principally confined to the old workings, and that the coal area, or good section of the mine, is not likely to be affected.— Westport Tiaas*.
Since the formation of the Westport Coal Company it has paid away in wages £869,328 ; in royalty, railway haulage, rates, and taxes, £455,015 ; freights to local carriers, £620,835 ; stores, £75,333 ; new works, £221,005 ; repairs and sundries, £23,214; making a total of £2.264.73Q
